‘Disbelief’ after no prosecutions following Bobby Storey funeral

William Irwin said: “The news that the PPS has not recommended any prosecution over the Bobby Storey funeral has been met with absolute disbelief by the wider public.

“The scenes witnessed and aired on TV over that funeral event sparked major and significant concerns at the time and rightly drew widespread and serious criticism. The spectre of Michelle O’Neill attending a very large funeral event and then telling everyone else to abide by the Covid19 restriction rules really stuck in people’s throats and rightly so.”

He added, “The explanation provided as the basis of this decision by the PPS, only causes further concerns and raises many, many more questions.

“It is beyond abhorrent that during the various stages of lockdown, where hundreds of families grieved the loss of a loved one without a vital network of support from friends and family due to the restrictions, that they then witnessed this massive public event for an IRA man which totally disregarded the rules.”

He concluded, “It really beggars belief that out of this referral to the Public Prosecution Service no one is to be held responsible by the courts.

“That simply does not wash and will not wash with the law abiding public. This issue demands the most urgent action and there are of course many questions for the PSNI to answer in this regard. My party leader has rightly called in to question the integrity of the Chief Constable in this matter given the fact the PPS has cited the involvement of the PSNI as an intervention that has shaped the PPS decision. This is wholly unacceptable and a massive error of judgement and this issue will not simply go away.”
