Don’t take axe to Ballymoney library - Storey

North Antrim DUP MLA Mervyn Storey has called upon the D/CAL Minister and Libraries NI to rethink plans to reduce the opening hours for Ballymoney Library.

Speaking after plans to slash the library’s opening hours by 30% were announced Mr. Storey said:

“Ballymoney Library makes a vital ongoing contribution to the life of the local community.

“There has been widespread understandable concern expressed by people ever since these plans were announced. What Ballymoney most definitely does not need is any further asset stripping.

“Ballymoney has suffered a number of blows in terms of job losses and what we need is a concerted effort to regenerate the town. That is the course that should be followed not the withdrawal of further vital services.

“The new D/CAL minister received additional money as a result of the recent budget settlement. I welcome the additional monies that Finance Minister Sammy Wilson made available to her at that time.

“She ought to work in conjunction with Libraries NI in order use some that additional money to protect this vital community service and see to it that Ballymoney Library does have an axe taken to it in this manner.”
