DUP Alderman applauds Eglinton village footpath scheme

ALDERMAN Maurice Devenney has praised the Roads Service for the long-awaited completion of the extension to the village path in Eglinton.

For just under two years villagers and leisure walkers were forced to walk along the main road for 150 metres as Mr Devenney and MLA William Hay campaigned for the path to be connected and the area brought up to a suitable standard in line with the major roadworks on the outskirts of the village.

Mr Devenney said there was a health and safety issue inthe village as people were forced to walk on the road to get from one side of the village to the other or even to go for a leisurely stroll.

He said: “This is quite a busy road which leads directly into the village, and it is a minor miracle that no one has been injured while out jogging or walking.

“There has always been a gap in footpath provision in the village and the DUP were only too happy to help villagers campaign for a properly constructed, secure route for pedestrians and those who want to be outdoors walking their pets or getting fit. We are particularly indebted to Steve Honey, from the Roads Service in Coleraine, for his help in securing this project and moving it forward,” Mr Devenney said.

“It’s completion now means the villagers and visitors to the area can walk safely without ever having to set foot on the main road,” he said.
