Speaking in the Assembly on Monday, Mr Ramsey said: “I am saddened to hear of the passing of Baron Molyneaux of Killead. I want to offer my sympathy and condolence and that of the SDLP to the friends and family of James Molyneaux.

“To say that James Molyneaux has had a distinguished career would be accurate. For many years he was a household name, and a key player in Northern Irish politics,” he said in his tribute, continuing: “He spent 27 years as an MP, being elected to South Antrim initially, and then to Lagan Valley. He was first elected as an MP in 1970, and only four years later he became the leader of the UUP in the House of Commons.

“James Molyneaux has certainly had a formidable career. In 1979 he became the leader of the UUP – a position he held for 16 years, making him one of the longest serving leaders of the party. He led the party through many difficult times for Northern Ireland, and he helped to guide the party trough their greatest trials,” he said.

“My sympathy and the sympathy of the SDLP not only go to his family and friends, but to the wider unionist community.”
