In a statement, Mr. Fulton said: “I want to thank all of those who have come up to me and wished me well following the news that I wont be standing for election to the new council

“However, I want to assure people that I will continue to serve on Larne council until it hands over full powers to the new council in March 2015.

“Some thought that I was stepping down immediately but that’s not the case. I will still be working day in, day out for people and will be happy to help them with any problems.

“I am delighted that Gordon Lyons has been selected to run in my place and I have no doubt that he will do a great job on behalf of the people in the area. I have known him for many years and he will be an excellent addition to the DUP team in Larne. In the meantime, I look forward to continuing the work that the people first elected me to do in 1978.”
