Mrs Kelly said: “The media coverage following the sad death of John Hume has reminded many of us how far we have come and astounded many of our young people who having seen footage of the ‘Troubles’ for the first time learnt of the savagery through which their parents and grandparents lived.

“I’m exceptionally proud of John Hume and our party’s founders for their vision and courage through the worst of times and to hear John Hume spoken of in the same terms as Martin Luther King. Their thirst for respect, tolerance, social justice and equality lives on in the SDLP today and there are many challenges ahead as we work to fulfil John Hume’s vision of uniting people and ending division and hatred.

“I for one am keen to get on with the job and I thank John for laying the foundations and showing the way. It is a heritage to be proud of.”
