Kids’ services boss says social mediamisuse a ‘threat’

The head of children’s services at the Western Trust has warned the inappropriate use of social media is presenting a serious threat to the lives of young people.

Kieran Downey told members of the Western Trust Board that whilst digital advances over the past number of years were generally positive, vigilance is required.

According to a minute of a recent meeting, Mr Downey drew attention to “issues surrounding exploitation - issues around e-safety and social media.”

He said that “while technological advances were to be welcomed there was a serious threat to the lives of young people where these mediums have been inappropriately used.”

Mr Downey went on to state that the safety of children in the western area remained a priority for the Western Trust and that the commitment and dedication of staff made sure this remained the case.
