Members of the PUP say they have received numerous complaints about street lighting in Irish Street area

Particularly effected are Mourne Drive, Derg Crescent and Erne Gardens

Nigel Gardiner said he had spoken to Roads Service and was informed that there was an embargo on carrying out repairs.

“We have a sizeable elderly population living in Irish Street who now feel very vulnerable, fearing for their health and safety,” he said.

Mr Gardiner said: “The increase in burglaries is having an added impact and is a further cause of worry. The Department of Social Development have failed in their duty to ensure that there is adequate street lighting and the failure of the two main political parties to agree is nothing short of abysmal.”

Calling for action, he said: “In the event of someone having an accident I would like to ask the question ‘who will accept responsibility?’

“The political parties have a duty of care to deliver for there electorate. They have failed. Come the elections in May are we going to listen to the same empty promises and rhetoric?”
