Maureen Litter who is standing as the SDLP candidate in the Lagan River ward said she was ‘extremely disappointed’ to discover that approximately 15 to 20 posters had been ripped off poles in the Lurgan and Waringstown areas last Thursday night.

The placards had been on poles along the Gilford Road and Waringstown, however, within 12 hours of erecting them, they had been torn down.

Maureen said: “It won’t hold me back. Questions need to be asked as to where is democracy? Everyone should be entitled to campaign on an equal footing, and those responsible for removing the posters have left me very concerned.”

She said that after living in the area for more than 20 years ‘there are still sections of the local community who cannot see the value of cross party and cross community relations’.

“They must want a divided society and this is very sad as we try to move forward to a new and inclusive Northern Ireland,” she said adding that she had spoken to eye witnesses who claimed to see three young men at 12.30am getting out of a small dark coloured car with their full headlights on. Most probably to prevent locals reading the registration,” she said.

Colleague Banbridge Councillor Marie Hamilton also expressed her  concerns.

“I know that Maureen has worked extremely hard during this election campaign and fortunately she will not let these people, who are afraid of change, stop her from fighting a fair campaign.

“I feel it is essential that all those who want to move forward go out and vote on May 22nd we are stronger when we work together”.

Mrs Litter said the PSNI has been informed.
