Lobbying for the completion of Millennium Way

COUNCILLOR Carla Lockhart has called on Department of Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy for the completion of Millennium Way.

Speaking at a Special Council meeting, Cllr Lockhart said, “Millennium Way is a long awaited lifeline to the people and business owners of Lurgan.

“This stretch of road has been promised for well over 35 years and it would if completed assist in the regenerating of our town centre which has suffered greatly at the hands of sectarianism and more recently the economic downturn.

“It would help eradicate the bottleneck of traffic in the town centre which would ultimately complement the new public realm works which aims to make the town more pedestrian friendly.

“It would open up vast amounts of land within the town boundary for business growth and to encourage new multinationals to the area which in turn would mean job creation.

“Additionally the completion of this road would alleviate the major access problems to Lurgan Junior High School and the new 3G pitches.

“With a vast number of pupils attending LJHS there are major traffic problems in the mornings and evenings and indeed access to the new pitches is problematic especially after school hours.”

Following the Minister’s response to the issue, Cllr Lockhart said, “I am disappointed at the fact that the Minister cannot give a firm and definite answer on this matter given that the overall cost of the scheme is minimal in terms of the overall DRD budget.

“I and my DUP colleagues will continue to lobby for completion. The good people of Lurgan deserve delivery.”
