The Irish News today reported that Mr McGuinness was admitted to Altnagelvin Hospital two weeks ago because of side affects to treatment he is having for a suspected genetic condition.

Mr McGuinness (66) resigned from his role as Deputy First Minister in January, sparking an election which saw Sinn Fein win almost the same number of seats as the DUP.

He appeared frail while announcing his decision in a television broadcast at that time.
