Mayor’s disappointed by McCandless move

THE mayor of Coleraine, Alderman Maurice Bradley, has spoken of his “disappointment” at his former DUP colleague William McCandless who has joined the UUP.

Alderman Bradley said he viewed the loss of councillor McCandless to the UUP with mixed emotions after he was informed by his former DUP colleague of his decision to change affiliation on Tuesday night.

“William is a close friend and will remain so, not withstanding his decision to leave the DUP and join the Ulster Unionists,” said the Mayor.

“I am disappointed that he has decided to do this but I have known for some time that he was not happy with some aspects within Coleraine Council chamber.

“When you canvass with someone, you get to know them better than previously. And, whilst on the campaign trail, you get an insight into their thinking.

“I trusted William, I confided in him and I trusted his judgement. He has been an asset to the DUP and Coleraine Council since his election. I have no doubt he will continue to be so, albeit within another political grouping.

“On a person level, I enjoy a good working relationship with William. I see no change in that. He has come to a decision and I must respect that decision.

“I am nonetheless disappointed, but I wish my former DUP colleague best wishes for the remainder of this term”, concluded the Mayor.
