More brown bins distributed by council

Earlier in the year, Council secured funding of over £90,000 from ‘Rethink Waste’ to help purchase and distribute 2,794 brown bins, 332 green bins, 25l kitchen caddies and 3,000 rolls of biodegradable bags for the kitchen caddies to homes which meet the criteria throughout Craigavon.

Council began to distribute the bins last month and issued over 500 caddies to residents across the Borough.

As well as garden waste - including grass, leaves, flowers, plants, twigs and hedge trimmings – you can also put the following items into your brown bin - Plate scrapings including meat and bones, tea bags, egg shells, fruit, vegetables and peelings, bread and cold ashes.

The kitchen caddy will take all garden waste, food scrapings, tea bags and coffee grounds, cereals, fruit, veg and any peelings from cooking prep – raw or cooked.

Plastic bags, plastic liners, metal and glass, food containers and trays and any other household waste cannot be put in the caddy or brown bin. Trials of the caddy scheme in Craigavon show that those homes with a kitchen caddy result in an increase of between 6-19% in weight of their brown bin. This should mean another 350 tonnes of organic waste being recycled leading a saving of at least £18,760 a year.
