Nationalists accused of ostracising unionists in Mid Ulster

The DUP group leader on Mid Ulster District Council Councillor Paul McLean has accused nationalist politicians of ostracising unionists in Mid Ulster.

Councillor McLean said he was "extremely disappointed but not suprised" that Sinn Féin and the SDLP had again voted not to light up the council buildings for the Centenary of Northern Ireland.

Speaking after a meeting of the Policy and Resources Committee last night, Councillor McLean said: "Sinn Fein and the SDLP voted against this based on - in their own words - it 'was a step too far for republicans' because it was partitioned against the will of the people and on the past history within Northern Ireland.

"Other statements made by republicans was that the 'lights should be switched off because the day of partition was a dark day for this island.'"

He added: "Clearly as far as Sinn Fein and SDLP are concerned, unionists are not welcome and will not be welcome to either mark or celebrate their culture in Mid Ulster."
