PIP court venues ‘intimidating environment for vulnerable people’ says Dolores Kelly

The use of courts for PIP appeals create an ‘adversarial and intimidating environment for vulnerable people’, says SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly.

The Upper Bann MLA has called for a review of the procedure and says she has received an assurance from the Justice Minister that the issue will be raised with the Minister for Communities.

She said: “PIP appeals can be upsetting and difficult experiences for the vulnerable people forced to give evidence about their personal circumstances and their need for additional support. Every measure should be taken to ensure that appeals are conducted in a supportive environment.

“The use of court buildings for tribunals is, in my view, not appropriate. These venues create an adversarial and intimidating environment for vulnerable people who often feel like they’re on trial. It’s time for a review of this setup.

“I am pleased that the Justice Minister shares some of these concerns and has committed to discussions with the Minister for Communities on the issue. The Minister should give urgent consideration to alternate opportunities for hosting appeals in the best interests who need support.”
