SF councillor Johnny McGibbon to resign

Sinn Fein Councillor Johnny McGibbon has confirmed the Mail he is resigning his seat on Craigavon Borough Council.

Party colleague Catherine Seeley is set to take his seat at Monday night’s council meeting.

Cllr McGibbon is to remain as a personal assistant to Upper Bann MLA and Education Minister John O’Dowd.

He told the Mail he was stepping down due to work commitments within the party and for personal reasons. He is also currently studying for a degree.

Johnny was also coopted onto Craigavon council in August 2007 and then elected in the 2011 local government elections.

He was the Sinn Féin Council Group leader and a member of the Council’s Environmental Services, and Policy and Resources Committees.

He also served as National Secretary and Ulster Organiser for Ógra Sinn Féin (Sinn Féin Youth) while still in his teens. Johnny gave up his studies at the University of Ulster to become the youngest Councillor on Craigavon Council in 2007.

Catherine Seeley who is a member of Craigavon Policing & Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) is a trained teacher and has been a member of Sinn Fein for some years. She is 25 years old.
