Sports Coaching for Schools is brilliant - McLaughlin

Cloughmills Sinn Fein councillor Cathal Mclaughlin has spoken of the great success the Primary Schools Sports Programme has been since its introduction in 2007, signalling it as a great initiative and welcoming the additional funding of £6 million for its continuation over the next 4 years.

Education Minister Catriona Ruane made the announcement of more funding last week and it will sustain the programme which has twenty four coaches from the Irish Football Association (IFA) and 32 Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) coaches delivering training for over 33,000 children in 551 primary schools across the north of Ireland.

Cllr McLaughlin said: “As a father I can appreciate the great focus that the Primary Schools Sports Programme has provided for children since its inception. It has ensured a healthy and active lifestyle for students, and it has enhanced their skills in soccer and Gaelic. Encouraging children to take an active interest in sports from an early age, and to provide them with quality coaches to enhance their fitness and skills is a brilliant initiative and I am absolutely delighted that the investment of £1.5 million per year has been made over the next 4 years to keep this excellent and worthwhile programme going that everyone will benefit from.”
