Storey calls on Government to rethink plans to make cuts in winter fuel payments to the elderly

In a statement issued this week, Mr. Storey said: “The UK Government is to cut the Winter Fuel Payment by £50 for people aged between 60 and 80, and by £100 for those aged over 80.

“This is despite the fact that last December was the coldest in Northern Ireland for over 100 years. More than 750 people died of cold related illnesses in Northern Ireland in 2009/2010.”

“Coming at a time when we are witnessing significant increases in oil, gas and electricity prices this cut could not have been timed any worse.

“I know from the very regular contacts I have had with constituents on this that there are many people in North Antrim who are very worried about how they are going to be able to stay warm over the course of the winter.”

“That is why I have been active in getting people to sign up to the Age Sector Platform’s fight the winter fuel cut campaign. This is a vital issue for many people.

“For some it could well be a matter of life and death. It is imperative that the government gets the message.”
