Torch concern

LOCAL MLA Stephen Moutray has expressed his disappointment that Lurgan is to miss out on the Olympic torch as it is carried across Northern Ireland.

He said: “I am disappointed that the Olympic Torch is not scheduled to be carried through Lurgan and regret that the organisers didn’t include one of Northern Ireland’s foremost and most historic provincial towns in the itinerary. This is a prestigious event and Lurgan ought to have been included in the itinerary.

“However I am pleased that the Olympic Torch will pass through most of Upper Bann on its way to the Olympic Stadium in London for the 2012 Olympics.

“The fact that it is to go through Upper Bann is something that will provide a once in a lifetime event for many people to be part of a genuinely world-wide phenomenon.”

“It is vital that the London Olympics is presented and marketed as not just solely a London event, but a UK nationwide event.”
