Polling day dawns in Upper Bann

THE country goes to the polls today (Thursday) in one of the most hotly contested General Elections in many years.

In Upper Bann five candidates are standing, all hoping to be our next MP.

David Simpson of the DUP is defending the seat he won from former UUP leader David Trimble.

Hoping to regain the seat for the Ulster Unionists/Conservatives is Harry Hamilton, a new face for the UUP and front man for Queen tribute act Flash Harry..

Aiming to cause an upset is Sinn Fein's John O'Dowd, with some opinion polls putting him a close second for the seat.

Also in the fray is Dolores Kelly of the SDLP who will be hoping to improve on her performance from last time round and make inroads against Sinn Fein.

Another new face is Brendan Heading who is standing for the Alliance Party.

The Electoral Commission is reminding voters to make sure they have the correct form of photographic identification when they go to the polls.

Samus Magee, Head of the Electoral Commission’s office in Northern Ireland, said: “If you’re on the electoral register and are considering voting, you will need to bring the correct form of ID in order to vote. The ID does not need to be current, but without it, you won’t be able to vote.”

In order to vote in the UK general election, you must bring any one of the following forms of photographic ID: a UK or Irish passport; UK or EEA driving licence; a Translink Senior Smartpass, 60+ Smartpass, Blind Persons Smartpass or War Disabled Smartpass or an electoral identity card
