Pomeroy being put forward for £3.7m investment

Included in the plan, are proposals for a building on the site of the old Pomeroy Forest School as well as improvements to the village, new GAA facilities, A 4G pitch and a new building and walkways linking St Elizabeth Primary School and the Church of Ireland.

While there is a chance that the bid might not be successful, it was given the thumbs up by councillors who passed minutes from this month’s Development Committee.

Mid Ulster District Councillor and Pomeroy native, Cathal Mallaghan has praised the application.

He said: “I welcome the council’s decision to support Pomeroy for this Peace IV competitive bid. Officers have spent a lot of time consulting with the community developing a plan which will enhance community facilities and relations.

“However, it is important to stress that while our plans are ambitious, there is no guarantee of funding and there is lots of work still to be done in order to submit a successful application.

“This project will be judged against projects from right across the north and the southern border counties so it will be extremely competitive.

“If it is successful it will have such a significant impact that not only this generation will benefit from, but the next as well.”

If successful, council hope to upgrade Pomeroy, install a child-friendly trail in the forest, install new safety barriers and lights and a new building for arts, sports and community events.
