The building, which dates back to 1882, is being transformed by its owners Kieran and Rosaleen Murphy.

The listed building served as a petty session court and a butter and egg market at the same time

This was the case right up into the middle of the 20th Century when became more commercial - with a bookmakers and hardware store based there until the building closed.

Kieran and Rosaleen are now carefully restoring the building to its former glory and have plans to turn the upstairs into accommodation, with commercial premises on the ground floor.

The work carried out is very detailed as the court house was formally listed in 2008 as as a class B2 listed building - meaning its design has significant importance and heritage.

Councillor for the area Cáthal Mallaghan has welcomed the work.

“It is great to see a building like this restored,” he told the MAIL.

“It is right in the heart of the village and will now become a showpiece of late 19th Century architecture and design.

“It will also be a lovely home for a family and hopefully a new business will emerge which will benefit our local economy.

The timing is also very good as Pomeroy and the Rock are in the middle of a Village regeneration project where council are in the process of spending almost £80,000 in enhancement and paint schemes.

Councillor Mallaghan added: “By the end of the summer Pomeroy will have had a huge facelift which will make our village more welcoming for business and visitors.

“I pay tribute to the Murphy family for taking on an expensive project like this in very difficult times.”

Work is expected to finish on the building by the end of summer.
