Poor state of Coleraine roads are a concern - McClure

THE poor state of some of Coleraine's roads has been responsible for causing damage to cars, DUP Alderman James McClure has claimed.

The public representative says he is speaking out because he has received complaints from constituents.

“I have had a number of calls over recent weeks from frustrated drivers about the poor standard of some of our roads including the Millburn Road which is one of the busiest routes into Coleraine,” he said.

“It seems that the current problems are a legacy from previous road works which saw parts of carriageways left in a poor way.

“The combination of works by various utility companies and the effect of last winter’s severe weather have resulted in some poor road surfaces,” Alderman McClure said.

People have told me that they have had tyres damaged but in general there seems to be a frustration about the uneven surfaces, particularly along Millburn Road.

“I am aware that gas pipe laying work is currently ongoing around the town and I would hope that when it is complete, the roads will be reinstated to a high level,” he said.

“While I am not for one moment pointing the finger of blame at any particular firm, utility companies do have the right to dig up roads to lay cables but they must also ensure that they leave the carriageway in a fit state afterwards.

“I realise funding is being cut back in many areas and maintaining our roads will be a strain for the Roads Service but I must also commend them for the recent improvement work at Hanover Place and on the country section of Ballycairn Road.”
