Poots committed to independent living

The Minister was speaking as he visited Strickland’s Care Village in Bangor where he acknowledged the role it plays in supporting people with disabilities to live fuller, more independent lives in the community.

Strickland’s Care Village forms part of the Northern Ireland Institute for the Disabled. It provides care and support for individuals with physical and learning disabilities, including a number of adults who have been resettled from Muckamore.

Minister Poots said: “Since becoming Health Minister, learning disability has remained a key issue on my agenda and I remain fully committed to helping people with learning disabilities to live as independently as possible.”

The Minister continued: “I am delighted to have had the opportunity to tour Strickland’s Care Village and meet with its residents and staff. This is an excellent facility which gives tenants the opportunity to live in a supportive community with dedicated staff and high standards of care, while still enjoying their freedom and independence.

“I have also been extremely impressed by the efforts to create a friendly, homely atmosphere and I congratulate the management and staff for their work to achieve this in what comes across as a lovely place to live.”
