Poots not convinced scheme is right

Assembly member Edwin Poots said he was supportive of measures which can help provide employment opportunities for newly qualified teachers but said he was not convinced the Education Minister has got the scheme correct.

“These plans were first announced before Christmas and this has meant that proper scrutiny could not take place for a number of weeks after that initial announcement,” he said.

“The Education Committee raised some questions about the entry point for the scheme. As a Party we are still awaiting answers to a number of questions in relation to the scheme, about its value for money and its exact details.

“The final details of the scheme are anticipated from the Minister, possibly in February and a number of changes are expected.

“We are aware some issues have been raised with the Equality Commission, which may necessitate amendments within the final announcement.”

“It is also widely expected that any proposals may be subject to legal challenge, which could significantly impact on their chances of success.”
