Pope mobile the highlight

Banbridge Historical Society had a very successful outing to Greenore and the Cooley Peninsula on June 4.

A light lunch of soup and sandwiches was provided by the local golf club before the group had a guided tour of Greenore and a visit to The O’Hanlon private collection of tractors, farm machinery and a Pope Mobile.

The O’Hanlon family acquired the Pope Mobile in an auction.

Members of the Historical Society had fun climbing up and sitting in the Pope’s seat and several of the men swore they were never going to wash their trousers again! It’s an interesting experience.

The vehicle has sufficient room to hide four armed guards inside so the Pope is surrounded by tight security.

After their visit to the O’Hanlon private collection to society had a bus tour round Carlingford before heading back to the golf club and enjoying a meal surrounded by the spectacular backdrop provided by the Cooley Mountains.

The next meeting of Banbridge Historical Society will be held on the first Thursday in September at 7.30pm in the Old Town Hall.
