‘Poppies and Lillies’ tour to visit sites of conflict

Community and voluntary sector representatives in the Derry City Council area are encouraged to attend a free three-day residential event between 17-19 September, aimed at exploring how key events in British and Irish history have shaped how we commemorate and reflect on issues today.

The ‘Poppies and Lilies’ tour will bring together people from diverse identities to visit sites associated with WW1, Easter Rising 1916 and the Battle of the Boyne. Visits will include Kilmainham Gaol and other sites in Dublin, the Boyne Heritage Centre, The Somme Heritage Centre and Schomberg House. However, no advance knowledge of history is required.

The residential was developed as a regional project between Derry, Limavady, Moyle, Coleraine, and Ballymoney Councils and will include overnight stays in Dublin and Belfast. The residential is part of the delivery of the Councils’ Good Relations Strategy, and is funded by the Community Relations Unit in OFMDFM.

Places on the residential are limited to a maximum of one person per community group and the deadline for submitting applications is Friday, 17th August 2012.

Sue Divin, Community Relations Officer with Derry City Council, expects demand to be high for the limited places. Encouraging local community and voluntary workers to apply, she said the ‘Poppies and Lilies’ residential will give an insightful and unforgettable look into British and Irish History and how events that took place years ago still have an impact on us today. “The residential is free and promises to be a great three days so I would urge anyone who works or volunteers in a local community group to submit an application!”
