Poppy bed at Cable Road

A poppy flower bed commemorating the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, along with the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings, will be sited at the top of the Cable Road in Whitehead.

The development follows a request from the Royal British Legion to place three of the flower beds at sites in Carrick, Whitehead and Greenisland.

At a meeting of the Parks, Countryside and Amenities Sub-Committee on March 7, it was noted that the Cable Road site had been identified by Brighter Whitehead as the most appropriate location. The group also noted that the site was best suited to perennial poppies and not field poppies, which are a meadow plant that require support from grass.
