Poppy meadow to mark anniversary of Great War

Members of Glengormley Community Group, with help from staff from Newtownabbey Borough Council, have planted a ‘poppy meadow’ in the community garden at Lilian Bland Park.

It’s hoped the mix of red and white poppies will flower next spring - a fitting way to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.

“This will show our appreciation for those who fought and lost their lives,” explained Community Group chairperson, Catherine Hardy.

“The white peace poppy is especially symbolic to the group as we work within our community to bring everyone together, from all the elements within our community.

“We also felt that it would be a nice thing to bring colour to the garden for the spring time,” she added.
