Population of Ballymoney and Moyle continues to grow

THE population in Ballymoney and Moyle has risen by a staggering 4,594 people since 2001, according to the Mid-Year Estimates 2010.

In 2001 27,007 people lived in the borough, compared to 30,561 in 2010 while in Moyle 15,961 people were residents with 16,998 in 2010.

During a recent Full Council meeting members also heard that Ballymoney is continuing to show population growth and has had a continuous growth in population since 1992.

The summary of the mid-year population estimates 2010 for the Causeway area also revealed: ‘There has been a slowdown in growth from a peak of 1.77% (516) between 2006 and 2007. Mid-year 2010 was an increase of 0.41% (125) from 2009; in 2009 it was 1.11% (333) from 2008 and from 2007 to 2008 it was 1.22% (365).

‘Over the last year, 2009/10, the growth of Ballymoney has mainly been the result of natural change ie number of births less number of deaths, with a small contribution from net internal migration (migration across District Council areas within Northern Ireland only).

‘In comparison to the other three Council areas within the Causeway area ie Coleraine, Limavady and Moyle, Moyle has also illustrated population growth.

‘Both Coleraine and Limavady experienced a contraction in population; for Limavady this is the third consecutive year that its population has reduced.

‘As a result, the four Council area has an overall reduction in the total population.’
