Portadown man critically injured in cliff fall

A 23-year-old man remains in a critical condition in hospital after falling 60ft off a cliff at the North West 200.

Alan Black, from Portadown, suffered a serious head injury when he fell onto rocks at Ballyreagh Road shortly before 3pm.

Mr Black, who works in a family gardening business, was standing at the back of the Rock Cafe, when he fell over a fence off the cliff to the rocks below.

It is thought he had been lying at the scene for around half an hour before he was found.

He was given emergency treatment by doctors from the Race Medical Team and the Coastguard was asked to assist with his recovery to the top of the cliff.

The inshore lifeboat from Portrush and the Coastguard Rope Rescue Team from Coleraine were both sent to the scene. A Royal Naval Sea King helicopter was also tasked from Prestwick in Scotland.

The PSNI said the 3pm race was delayed as emergency services and race doctors attended to the man.

He was airlifted by the PSNI to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
