Portballintrae Harbour workto cost £340,000, Council told

There has been severe deterioration identified in areas of the outer pier resulting in the strength of the harbour wall being compromised and unless remedial action is taken there is the likelihood that the harbour deck slab could subside.

Director of Environmental Services Aidan McPeak presented three options for the work but recommended the second of these .

This involved the replacement of the sheet piled wall and concrete decking which are key elements of the harbour structure with an estimated cost of £340,000.

DUP’s councillor Duddy asked about the potential life span of the project as he “did not want a stop gap” fix to the problem. Mr. Peak believed it to be around 40 years.

UUPcouncillor Joan Baird asked when was the last time the harbour was maintained?”

He replied: “The first sheets were installed in 1982 and maintenance on the harbour has been left to its own devices for a number of years and that’s why we need the maintenance now and why he have the problem with deterioration.

Lead Officer in the project, John Richardson said: “The work is based on tide times not the time of year. It is quite a simple process and we can drive sheet pile sin even if the seas are rough. I don’t envisage that it will have much impact on tourism and feel we can manage it well to avoid that.”

Councillor George Duddy proposed that the Committee proceed with Option 2 and it was seconded by Councillor Joan Baird.
