Portrush Flyer steam train returns after five years

FOLLOWING extensive work by Translink to upgrade the Coleraine-Portrush railway line, the “Portrush Flyer” steam train from Belfast to Portrush will made a triumphant return to the seaside town for the first time in five years on Sunday.

It will also be running on Sunday 10th July and 30th July. Each time, there is an opportunity for local people and holidaymakers to take a trip on the train from Portrush to Coleraine and back in the afternoon, before the main train returns to Belfast.

“We are delighted to return this famous train to Portrush” commented Mervyn Darragh, RPSI Operations Officer.

“We have worked hard to restore the carriages and original steam locomotive at our workshops and now its time to have some fun and let everyone experience the uniqueness of steam train travel. The railway line from Portrush to Coleraine has steep climbs and stunning sea views and, with the sound of the locomotive and the sight of the smoke, offers a great way to spend an hour in the afternoon.”

John Lockett, RPSI Vice-Chairman speculated that “There is plenty of time for everyone to get up close to the big steam locomotive, talk to the driver and fireman and smell the smoke and oil. It’s a multi-sensory experience, perfect for Thomas the Tank Engine fans, old and young!”

The Portrush-Coleraine trains will depart from Portrush station at 3pm on Sundays, July 10 and 30. All tickets cost £6 for the 75 minute round trip and are for sale from the conductor on the steam train.
