“Over the past week we have received guidance from the RNLI and the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council. Our decision has been based upon the guidance received.

“Our overall desire is to act responsibly and do all we can to protect everyone from the threat posed by the virus.

“We would like to thank the support of our sponsors, our partners and the general public in this matter. We will keep you informed of any developments when a date is rescheduled.

“Please look after yourselves and your families. Stay safe.”

Meanwhile the RNLI issued advice to anyone intending to exercise near the coast in the coming days.

A statement said: “Given the current COVID-19 outbreak and the importance of social distancing and avoiding non-essential contact with others, coastal areas provide a great opportunity to enjoy fresh air and exercise while adhering to the government’s guidance. However our coastal areas can also present dangers of their own. The RNLI is asking people to ensure they follow essential water safety advice.

“Please take the time to take note of signage at the entrance to the beach advising of the local hazards, check tide times to avoid being cut off and to check weather conditions before setting out as these can change quickly. If you do get into difficulty or see someone that is, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. More safety advice can be found at www.rnli.org/safety.”
