Positive message of skate parkartwork

A new mural has been unveiled at Carrick’s urban sports park last week as part of the SK8 urban expo event.

Created by young people involved in the Mapping Meaningful Solutions project, the theme for the graffiti artwork was ‘Skate not Hate’.

The project was facilitated by Re-ink Our Nation and was designed to create a positive message for the young people of the area.

Phil Glennon from the Northern Ireland Youth Forum said: “The event went really well. We were delighted by the large turnout from the public.”

Also attending the Amphitheatre expo on Wednesday evening was Carrickfergus Mayor, Alderman Billy Ashe.

“The skate park had been the target of vandalism and this mural is about the young people reclaiming it and addressing the problems of anti-social behaviour,” he said.

“We have seen that when young people come together in large numbers to enjoy their favourite pursuits such as skate-boarding, BMXing, street music and dance, sectarian and racist prejudices are forgotten.”
