When the Times spoke to a staff member at Stevenson’s Yard on Monday morning, they said of rumours that the business was closing, “It looks that way, but I cannot comment.”

Further calls to the business were left unanswered at time of going to press, however, local Sinn Fein councillor, Joe O’Neill, said he understood stock was being removed from the yard for some days.

Cllr O’Neill continued: “Everybody is in shock in Coalisland to hear the news, to be honest.

“Stevenson’s Yard has been such a long time in business in the town and it is absolutely crazy to hear that they are closing.

“I don’t know any details about the cause of this, but it is very disappointing for the town.

“I am surprised too at the news, because anybody would tell you the yard always seems to be a very busy place.”

The Coalisland Sinn Fein councillor said he understood the business employs between 10 and 15 people, and extended his support to those affected by any closure.

“I do feel sorry for anyone who is losing their job, it is a hard blow for anybody in that situation,” he concluded.

John Stevenson & Co was incorporated in November 1887, and the building supplies yard has been a hive of activity central to Coalisland’s business community over many generations.
