Post Office ransackedin '˜disturbing' robbery

A shop and post office in Castlederg was robbed and ransacked on Monday night in an incident Ulster Unionist Councillor Derek Hussey has described as 'disturbing.'

Cash and other items were stolen from the family-owned facility in Killen.

Mr Hussey visited the scene on Tuesday morning, March 1.

He said: “It appears that a person or persons have broken into the Village Shop and Post Office in Killen during the night. A member of the family, opening the premises in the morning, discovered that their family business had been robbed.

Police were contacted and were on site in a short space of time but obviously the perpetrators had long gone.

“This family business provides a vital service to Killen and its surrounding rural community and it is absolutely despicable that criminals should essentially attack not just this family but the entire community in this way.

“The family who are still dealing with the loss of a husband and father should not have to endure further trauma of this kind.

“It is clear that cash and other items have been stolen from the Shop and Post Office but equally as disturbing is the destructive mayhem that these people have left behind them.

“I have no doubt that the recovery of this business and Post Office in the aftermath will be assisted by many good friends and acquaintances throughout our community who will rally round in support.”

He added: “I unreservedly condemn this incident and urge that anyone with any information contact our local Police to assist them in their ongoing investigation.”
