The men attached to the High Street premises spent sometime at the Portrush Road roundabout urging passing motorists to give generously and early indications suggest they did just that with hundreds of pounds raised so far.

Later in the day, those daring enough, donned Telly Tubby outfits and proceeded to pull the van around the streets of Ballymoney where shoppers were encouraged to give to the worthy cause.

Just like the earlier effort, the postmen found themselves having no difficulty in getting donations from the public.

It had been planned to gather money the previous day in the annual street collection but this has had to be postponed because of a technical hitch and will now take place next month.

Until then, all the money will be held safely and when the final total is counted, a cheque will be handed over.

Manager of the Ballymoney operation, Sammy Graham, said he was delighted with the response from the public and thanked them for their generosity.

“We always get support.”
