Praise for barriers on road with 'biggest drop'

CUSHENDALL Sinn Fein councillor Oliver McMullan has praised Roads Service for a £90,000 scheme to stop vehicles toppling into the steep-sided Glenballyeamon.

The steel barrier was put in for over 600 metres on the section of the Ballyeamon Road which clings to the side of the Antrim plateau.

Along with the vertigo-inducing road in nearby Glenariff the Ballyeamon Road is believed to have one of the highest drops from its side of any highway in Northern Ireland.

Councillor McMullan and others had been campaigning for a better safety system put in at Ballyeamon Road.

In 2008 a man died after a vehicle went through a wire fence on the road before plunging over 100ft down a steep hill and there were also concerns when a bus carrying GAA members was involved in an incident on the road.

In the past Cllr McMullan branded the road “notoriously dangerous”.

Speaking at a meeting between Roads Service and Moyle Council, Cllr McMullan said: “Congratulations on the safety barriers at Ballyeamon Road - a good job well done and done very quickly.”

He said he had received many very good comments about the 90,000 scheme from the public.

Meanwhile, Cllr McMullan wants to see more safety improvements further up the Ballyeamon Road at ‘Midgey Corner’.
