Praise for swift action over Marshallstown Road flooding

The busy route was waterlogged due to blocked drains following stormy weather, according to Mid and East Antrim Councillor Andrew Wilson.

Mr Wilson said the roads authority was “ quick to act in clearing blocked storm drains and gullies and it was also heartening that council sent staff out to monitor the situation”.

East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs said: “It seems as if there is a problem at the (former) dog pound area, above the road.

“This caused flooding down the Sullatober Lane onto the main road.”

Mr Beggs added that some residents along the Marshallstown Road had to use sandbags to prevent their homes being affected by the floodwater.

Commenting on the issue, a Rivers Agency spokesperson said: “Initial investigations suggest that an undesignated watercourse, which is prone to overtopping in extreme conditions at a ‘private’ trash grille further up Sullatober Lane, is causing water to flow down the lane onto the main road.

“Rivers Agency will investigate if any enforcement or other appropriate action is necessary.”
