Prepare for winter now: cllr

Drivers of 4x4 vehicles have been encouraged to join the volunteer group N.I. 4X4 Response.

The call comes from Glens Sinn Fein Councillor Colum Thompson who is 4x4 Response driver and who was on call during the severe snow storms during the spring.

Councillor Thompson said: “With a bitterly cold winter and heavy snowfall predicted I would encourage anyone who drives a 4x4 to volunteer.

“There are no demands placed on volunteers other than to be contactable in an emergency. There is no pressure to respond if you are unavailable and no driver or vehicle will ever been asked to do something which they are not capable of doing. Third party insurance is provided through The Red Cross while you are on call and fuel and other expenses are provided.

Cllr Thompson has also reminded farmemrs that there is still time to register for snow clearing duties over the winter period.

“Last year we had a heavy snow fall so it’s important that we maximise the amount of people and equipment available to clear snow. DRD is now compiling a register of farmers who have proper equipment and are willing to join the snow clearing scheme. To cover the maximum number of roads we need more farmers and rural dwellers to sign up. Farmers can register by contacting DRD Road Service at the Coleraine Office.”
