Pride of Craigavon on show at Civic Centre for awards

Over 140 community representatives and dignitaries descended on Craigavon Civic and Conference Centre last week for the inaugural Pride of Craigavon Awards.

Organised by Craigavon Borough Council and part funded by the Department for Social Development, the prestigious awards ceremony recognised and celebrated the outstanding work and dedication of community groups across the borough of Craigavon.

Over 60 nominations were put forward by community groups for nine award categories which included the Community Newcomer Award, Creative Community Initiative Award and Community Award for small and large groups.

Winners on the night included - TADA Rural Support Network for the Community Award Large Group, Birches Cosy Club & Day Care Centre for the Age Sector Award and Craigavon & Banbridge Volunteer Bureau for the Creative Community Initiative Award.

Guests on the night included Mayor of Craigavon Councillor Carla Lockhart, Vice-Chair of the Development Committee Councillor Paul Duffy, Michael Donnelly from DSD and MP David Simpson.

Vice -chair of the Development Committee, Councillor Paul Duffy, said: “I am delighted that the first ever Pride of Craigavon Awards was a great success. It gave council the opportunity to champion all the good work which is taking place throughout the borough by our dedicated community groups. These groups work tirelessly for the benefit of their local area and give their time freely to improve and enrich the quality of life for all residents, young and old. Well done to all the winners and indeed everyone who entered, your work is vital to the local area and we appreciate it greatly”

“It was a great night which highlighted the tremendous work community groups across the Borough do day in, day out,”explained Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Carla Lockhart. “Without these groups Craigavon would be a much poorer place and I would like to commend all groups in the area who work hard for their neighbours and areas – you are all winners!”

With citations presented by popular TV personality Pamela Ballantine, a sit-down meal and entertainment by Swingabella, those who attended said it was a night not to miss.
