Principal of St. Anne’s, Corkey to retire

With 28 years experience under her belt, Carmel McKeown, Principal of St. Anne’s Primary School, Corkey has decided to step aside and retire and the end of the school year.

Having previously taught at St. Columba’s primary School, Kilrea and worked as a Scienec and Technology Field Officer for the North Eastern Board, Carmel arrived at St. Anne’s where she has led the way for the past 16 years.

“I will be sad to retire because St. Anne’s is such a lovely school,” said Carmel. “The children are an absolute delight and I have had great support there from everyone, they are my second family.”

With a special assembley due to be held on Monday 29th June to mark Carmel’s retirement, there is no doubt it will be an emotional occasion for this popular principal. “There are several things that stand out for me during my time at St. Anne’s,” added Principal McKeown. “I remember standing one February as the Millennium Garden was being constructed and looking at all the parents working away. It was that community connection which inspired me and I recognised that day what type of special school I had come to.

“Other achievments were winning the national Rolls Royce Science award and securing a quarter of a million pounds lottery funding which enabled the building of the new school.”

As her time at St. Annes’ draws to a close, Carmel has plans in place for her retirement. “I will miss everyone but I intend to spend more time with my family and enjoying my hobbies which include hill walking. I might even take up golf and cycling.”
