Prison warning for accused

A young Lurgan man has been told that if he did not co-operate with probation in the preparation of a pre-sentence report he could face the possibility of a prison sentence.

Jamie Patrick Downey (21), Princes Close, Lurgan, appeared last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

At an earlier court he had been convicted of unlawful possession of a class C drug, Lyrica, on July 18 last year, unlawful possession of herbal cannabis and driving while unfit on the Ardmore Road, Lurgan.

The case had been adjourned so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.

Last Wednesday’s court was told that three appointments were made for Downey to meet with probation but he did not attend.

Deputy District Judge, Mr John Connolly, told the defendant he could expect to go to prison.

After a short consultation Downey’s legal representative said that he was now willing to engage with probation.

Sentencing was adjourned until June 1 so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.
