Private funeral held for tragic house fire victim

A private funeral service has been held for house fire victim George Mathers, who died in a ferocious blaze at his Annaclone home last weekend.

The remains of the 82-year-old who lived alone at his Ballynafern Road farmhouse were recovered last Monday, two days after his home was destroyed by the blaze and emergency services were given the all-clear to enter the building.

According to a death notice in the News Letter, family and friends were welcome to attend his wake at his son’s home on the Ballynamagna Road, Rathfriland on last Wednesday and Thursday evening.

The death insertion said Mr Mathers’ death was deeply regretted by his sons George, John, David and Andrew, and the wider family circle.
