Prize Day at Ballymoney Model PS

Mr Witherow, Chairman of the Governors, welcomed both Mrs Jamison to her first prize day at the Model since joining the school as principal on the 1st February and the Guest of Honour for the event Miss Brenda Herron. Miss Herron had served as the vice-principal within the school for a number of years and since Mr McVeigh’s retirement in June 2011 had been the acting principal until her retirement in December 2012.

The event started of with the audience being entertained by the prize winning junior choir which had achieved 1st place in May at Portstewart Festival. The choir sang two pieces entitled ‘My Grandpa has Whiskers’ and ‘Colourful Hair’. This was followed by the Principal’s Annual Review of School Year. Mrs Jamison spoke of another successful year at the Model highlighting the large number of events that the school had been involved with throughout the year and the academic, sporting and musical successes that had been achieved by the children. She also thanked all the governors, staff, parents and children for the warm welcome and support she had received since starting at the Model in February. Mrs Jamison also acknowledged the work and commitment of all those involved within the school’s PTA who had organised a number of social and fundraising events throughout the year. Through the PTA’s efforts the school had benefited considerably this school year with the provision of new computer suite and classroom furniture.

The first set of presentations of the day took place for the Year 4 – Year 6 Class Awards for Mathematics & Numeracy, Language & Literacy, Art and the Year 5 Technology Cup.

Mr Witherow followed with his closing remarks before introducing the final musical performance of the day by the Senior Choir ‘There’s Magic in the Air’, ‘Silver Trumpet’ and ‘I want to be happy’.

Following this performance Mrs Jamison took the opportunity to acknowledge the success of both the Senior and Junior Choir at the recent Portstewart Festival where the two choirs achieved a total of two firsts and a second with a number of other children also achieving awards for their instrumental and vocal performances. Mrs Carson and Miss Stinson were both thanked for their hard work.
