Prizes given out at spring area meeting

THERE was a good attendance at the Iveagh Area WI meeting for spring which was held on Friday April 30 at Dromore Cathedral Hall.

The Area Chairman, Roberta Mathers, welcomed 106 members and guests. A special welcome was extended to the guest speaker, Marion Gibson, who had been recently delayed in the Philippines due to the volcanic ash cloud.

Sympathy was extended to Mrs Anne Young, executive member who was unable to attend the meeting due to a family bereavement.

In her absence, Anne’s reports for Federation and Home and Gardens were given by Kathleen Moore. Joan Whae gave the Homecraft report and Bette Hanna the report for the Arts. Maud Moorhead gave the Balmoral report and reminded all members about WI teas, sales table and arts and crafts in the Harberton Hall and the show from May 12-14.

The first six institutes: Artana, Balievey, Closkelt, Dollingstown, Dromore and Fourtowns all read their annual reports.

The following awards were presented: Full Gold Circle - Joan Smith, Waringstown. Ribbons for craft - Evelyn McCaughey, Lenaderg; Rosemary Reid, Loughbrickland; Margaret Hewitt (two ribbons, Waringstown; Joan Smith (two ribbons), Waringstown. The Dawson Cup (tean entry, three different crafts) - Waringstown. Cup for the best poem in the magazine - Evelyn Robb, Loughbrickland. Doreen Young Cup for untrained soprano voice - Caroline Ledley, Fourtowns. Dungannon Trophy - Linda Woods, Ballievey. Quiz Cup - Closkelt. Bowls Cup - Evelyn Robb, Loughbrickland. Loughbrickland Trophy, judged on the evening by Marion Gibson and won by Georgie Cairns, Artana.

Marion Gibson, renowned trauma counselling specialist, gave a fascinating and very informative insight into her work which took her all over the workd. She works with the Red Cross and the Maritime Missionary Organisation. This often means that at short notice she is called to bring together support teams for man made and natural disasters.

An enjoyable supper was served by Dromore WI and lovely floral decorations provided by Fourtowns. The sales table was manned by Moira.

The entertainment, which involved short sketches and poetry, was provided by Jerretspass and was thoroughly enjoyed by all members. The singing of the Countrywoman’s Song brought a most enjoyable evening to a close.
