Prizewinning snap brings back memories for former Maze man

Memories came flooding back for former Maze man Sam Rollins when he submitted an old photograph to a local newspaper and scooped the top prize in a competition.

Sam and his family moved to New Zealand back in the 1970s but he has always had fond memories of his hometown and when his son Thomas recently celebrated his 50th birthday he uncovered an old photo, which was taken when the family still lived at the Maze in 1971.

He then submitted the old photo to his local newspaper in Auckland and was surprised and delighted to win a competition for the best image.

The photograph won $50 in vouchers from the East and Bays Courier.

“I left the Maze in 1971 with my three young children to start a new life for them and myself after the sudden death of their mother at the age of 24,” explained Sam.

“My youngest child Thomas was only three years and nine months when his mother passed away.

“Myself and my eldest son and daughter have just celebrated Thomas’ 50th birthday on April 25 and this is a milestone in itself.

“I have been their mother and father since January 16, 1969 and I am very pleased to have seen them all reach their 50th birthdays.

“It has been a long journey and very difficult at times, especially getting them through their teenage years, as most parents would agree.

“I came to New Zealand to start a new life for myself and my children.

“It is the best move I ever made and I have no regrets.”
