Josephine Hoey (35), Chestnut Place, Banbridge, had admitted the theft of the glasses, valued at £20, from the Newry Street store when she appeared at an earlier court.Sentencing had been adjourned so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.

The court heard that she attended daily at the store to obtain medication and on June 2 she was seen taking the sunglasses and leaving the store without paying.

When interviewed by police she admitted the theft and later returned to the store to pay for the glasses.

District Judge, Mr Paul Copeland, said when the case was first heard he was suspicious that there were other factors which had to be taken into account.

Given the defendant’s remorse and her personal circumstances Judge Copeland said he would impose a probation order.
