Progress on new £788k Kilfennan park

PLANNING permission has been secured for the comprehensive development of the Kilfennan Valley Park playing pitch.

The final masterplan for Kilfennan Valley Park was completed in December 2011 and proposesd a new state-of-the-art 7-a-side floodlit multi-use pitch as well as a new play park, car park and pedestrian infrastructure that will cost an estimated £788,000.

Now Derry City Council has confirmed that Planning Permission has been secured in June 2012 for the comprehensive redevelopment of this amenity.

It is also considering entering a deed of dedication with the Fields in Trust group to protect the space for perpetuity as part of the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge.

“In keeping with the approved Masterplan, Fields in Trust (UK wide charity for the protection of outdoor space) have recently approached Council to ascertain as to whether Council would be willing to identify and nominate a playing field in Council ownership for their Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge.

“The aim of this challenge is to protect 2,012 playing fields for future generations as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 Olympic Games.

“Should Council wish to dedicate a playing field to this initiative, Council will be required to enter into a Deed of Dedication with Fields in Trust to protect this green space in perpetuity.

“This will ensure the protection of the pitch by placing a covenant on the land to ensure recreational interests are catered for. The Local community Caw, Nelson Drive Action Group (CNDAG) are supportive of this initiative.”
